Where it goes on Shopify

The file has to live at yourstore.com/llms.txt, at the root of your domain, not a normal page. Shopify won't host a root file natively, so you add it through your theme, a small app, or a redirect rule that points there.

What is an llms.txt file?

It's a plain-markdown file at the root of your domain that gives AI models a clean, curated map of your site: a short description of what you do, then a list of your most important collections, products and pages. Instead of the model guessing from a messy crawl, you hand it the answer.

Do you need an app to generate one?

No. The file itself is just text, which is what this tool builds for you. The only part Shopify makes fiddly is hosting it at /llms.txt, because Shopify won't serve a root-level file the normal way. The cleanest routes are a small app or a redirect rule (through your theme, an app, or your DNS/proxy layer) that points /llms.txt at the hosted file.

Is it worth adding one yet?

Honest answer: it won't hurt, but there's little evidence the big AI systems read llms.txt today to decide what to cite. They mostly work off what they've already crawled from the open web, so treat the file as a low-cost bet on where things are heading, not a switch that turns on AI traffic. Generate it, add it, then spend your real effort on the things that actually earn citations: clear question-and-answer content, valid schema, and getting your store name onto the roundups and forums AI already trusts.

Will it get you into AI search?

It helps AI understand you, but it isn't a magic ranking switch. Getting cited in AI answers still comes down to ranking, answering buying questions clearly, and being mentioned across the web. See getting product pages into Google AI Overviews for the full picture.
